Florida Fail: Florida City Bans The Hiring of Smokers
If you are having trouble kicking the habit, you would likely find the motivation in knowing your job depends on it.
Delray Beach City Commissioners on Tuesday announced a policy that would help the financially struggling city save money – refusing to hire smokers. Each smoker costs a company or government agency an average $12,000 in health and disability-related costs.

They are “arousal addictions,” where the attraction is in the novelty, the variety or the surprise factor of the content. Sameness is soon habituated; newness heightens excitement. In traditional drug arousal, conversely, addicts want more of the same cocaine or heroin or favorite food.
$100 For A Pack of Cigarettes?
That might soon be the case for smokers in New Zealand if the Minister of Health has his way.
The Ministry of Health wants New Zealand to be smoke free by 2025 and the suggested increase gives the first hint of the drastic measures being discussed. A document released under the Official Information Act to the country’s 3 News website features a number of pricing scenarios – with the most extreme showing a single cigarette costing the equivalent of £2.50. One option being considered is a 10% increase on a pack of 20 cigarettes year-on-year from 2013 to 2025, meaning it would cost $40 (£20) a pack by 2024.
