American Exchange Student Murder Conviction Overturned
Amanda Knox (Shown in picture) was convicted of murdering her Bristish roommate 4 years ago while studying in Perugia, Italy. From what I have gathered, it sounded like her roommate was in horrible shape. Either way, the court system decided on a retrial and the 24 year old was freed. Now this has created some disapproval from the Perugia public.
The four year ordeal of jailed American exchange student ended with tears of joy Monday when an Italian appeals court threw out her murder conviction – and ordered her freed.
Knox collapsed into the arms of a cheering relative before she was rushed out of the courtroom by court officers while prosecutors sat in stunned silence near the grim-faced relatives of murder victim Meredith Kercher.
“We’re thankful that Amanda’s nightmare is over,” Knox’s sister, Deanna Knox, said. “She has suffered for four years for a crime that she did not commit.”
After thanking Knox’s legal team and supporters, she added, “We are thankful to the court for having the courage to look for the truth and to overturn this conviction.”
Outside the Perugia courthouse, it was a different story.
Irate Italians – most of whom believe Knox is guilty – whistled their displeasure and chanted “Shame! Shame!”
The conviction of Knox’s alleged accomplice, Raffaele Sollecito, was also overturned.
The dramatic reversal of Knox’s fortunes came after she pleaded in Italian – a language she honed during four years in a local prison – for her freedom.
Knox insisted again that she did not kill her British roommate, Meredith Kercher.
“The perversion, the violence and the disrespect for life and for people, that’s not me, I didn’t do the things they said I did,” she said. “I didn’t kill, I didn’t rape, I didn’t rob, I wasn’t there.”
Fighting back tears, Knox said Kercher, 21, was her friend.
“I’ve lost a friend in the worst, most brutal, most inexplicable way possible,” said Knox. “I’m paying with my life for things that I didn’t do.”
I suppose there will always be two sides to every story. I don’t know whether she did or did not do it, but she said she didn’t so that is good enough for me. Can’t argue with a pretty face. Completely kidding. Sort of. Ok, I kind of have a weak spot for female tears. A man crying is a different story though! I passed by a mirror when I was crying once and my head almost literally exploded. No lie. On a different note, I have always wanted to go to Italy. Now I just need to stay away from the Umbria region and I will be fine. I feel like they may still have some bitter feelings.
